For those of you who weren't aware, the PLUG mailing list is archived and that archive is, or at least was, public. This is how it's always been and it's likely most people hadn't thought about it or been aware of it.
Very often when Googling for a solution to something you'll find an answer on a public mailing list archive - these are very useful. However it's unlikely that a local LUG list like ours will contain any treasures for worldwide consumption, and following a discussion off list I have today made the archive private, as it seems more common to find people who are more reluctant to say things publicly. If anyone feels this is a poor decision please say so - preferably here so it can be discussed, but off-list if you wish. (It would seem odd to make an argument about the importance of public archiving, but want to make that argument privately, but maybe there's a reason!) IMPORTANT: I'm not a supreme leader around here, if the group decides that the archive should be re-enabled then I will re-enable it. So keep that in mind until a consensus has been reached. (If you want to email me your views on this privately on that basis then please do.) Please note that this isn't a guarantee that mails posted here won't be visible publicly. I've logged into the admin interface and switched the "public" setting off, that's it. I accept no liability if it turns out there's more to it than that! (It would be helpful if others can verify the list archive is no longer visible.)
