I personally think this is a good principle.

However I do think it matters how the list is used, and looking at
recent - and not so recent - traffic, it tends to be closer to "pub
chat" than anything which would - generally - benefit from being
minuted for public consumption. (Personal opinion, not the "official"
position of lugmaster).

A list like this is very different from the mailing list of a project
where openness and searchability are far more important. Also, access
to our list archives just requires joining the list, it's not exactly
secret, it's just not exposed to Google etc.

That's fair, however by its nature it does mean that some things may
simply not be sayable, and would be best left to social meets or
discord. Which I think will tend to lead to the death of the mailing
list and a less accessible LUG as a result. And also:

I think this is inevitable - the list has been quiet for a long time
and it's not surprising that nobody remembers anything they were
informed of when they joined the list. The solution is a regular
reminder to the list, but I'd be reluctant to do that (would we have
wanted a weekly reminder through the past few years of silence?)

It is possible for me to delete messages from the archive (not sure
how but the functionality is there, I've just never used it). Anyone
who has a message they'd like removed can contact me off-list and I'll
work it out, whether or not the list archive remains private.

But as I said before, I'm not a dictator. It's not my choice to make,
just mine to implement. And whichever way it ends won't be to
everyone's preference, unfortunately.
