I think I'm going to add my name to the list of people who are unhappy with standby_mode as a parameter name. I really like the design of the feature, but the name is just not that clear. You can't read that parameter name and immediately know what it's trying to do. Furthermore, if you're wanting to use pg_standby, you might be forgiven for thinking that you should set standby_mode = on; but in fact that's exactly the wrong thing to do.
