Because they encode alot of information in a character- something which is next to impossible to do in "english". Consider 'standard' perl vs. perl w/ 'use English;'. The former is much more condesned and the latter is much more verbose. Which would you want to use on a daily basis and which would you like to have in an application someone else may have to support some day? Next question: how long do you really think you're going to be around? :) Stephen
