The debian package automatically makes a vacuum entry in the crontab. So, to a certain extent, this could be solved at the distribution level. However, the pg_autovacuum project will be a great improvement over that. Right now, the distributions mostly care about MySQL, so it will be nice to have postgresql handle that detail.
