I think it is more difficult to navigate through a tree than by using the panels. It is why IMHO the file browser in NextStep and then in MacOS X are more usable than their counterpart in Windows. And it is why I love the way the code browser works in the Smalltalk environments. In Eclipse or other IDE (Netbeans, IntelliJ, ...), in order to being productive, we have to use hotkeys to find a given class or a given method because the browsing by tree is painful in an every day work.
