It seems Mozilla is already actively working and proposing new HTML5 APIs like this one added to just released Firefox 16 : Getting started with making Web Apps https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Apps/Getting_Started After all that HTML5 infrastructure will be in-place, they will IMHO provide a painless transition from XUL as well.
