Dear all,
On Friday 17 June at 12pm (NOTE NEW TIME) Prof. Murali Ramachandran
(Witwatersrand) will be speaking at the Serious Metaphysics Group on:
Knowledge-to-Fact Reasoning:
Towards a Unified Solution to the Prediction Paradox
The abstract is as follows:
*** ABSTRACT. I have two goals in this paper. The first is to plug a
conspicuous hole in my 'bootstrapping' diagnosis of, and attendant solution
to, the surprise examination paradox ('Knowledge-to-Fact Arguments',
Analysis 76(2), 2016, pp. 142-49). The second goal is to show that the
resulting solution extends to Sorensen's 'recalcitrant' variants of the
so-called prediction paradox-our exemplar will be the designated student
variation-as well as, more significantly, his strengthened prediction
paradox and Olin's justified- prediction paradox. The bootstrapping
approach is the first to promise such a wide-ranging unified solution to
the prediction paradox. ***
The meeting will last from 12pm to 130pm. Everyone is welcome. Best wishes,
Arif
