I had a similar experience when I went from 7.3 to 8.0. I had a very
recent mobo whose southbridge was not recognised by the kernel in 7.3, and
as such I wasn't even ABLE to turn on DMA for ANY of my drives.
When I migrated to 8.0 I discovered that it had support for my southbridge
chipset, and magically it was capable of using DMA and automatically
enabled it. I think I might have had to manually enable it on my
CDROM/DVD drive, but I honestly can't remember. :)
