Thanks for the advice, folks, 'tis greatly appreciated. Sounds like I'll be sticking to 4-minute cylinders for a while if reproducers are going for $700!
Another quick Amberola question: did the 50 come with a bigger/better/different reproducer than the 30? I have a video clip of a 50 in use (part of a listing's sales tactic - effective!), and it sounds shockingly good. Cymbal crashes sound about as clean and treble-extended as recordings 50-75 years later. My 'new' Amberola 30 sounds fabulous, but I wouldn't put it in a class with that video clip of the 50. Is it my imagination, or have any of you heard 50's sounding remarkably better than 30's? The larger diaphragm should sound louder than the small one, but the three Os I have had never did. In the 2/4 machine, there is an added gear cluster that halves the speed of the feed nut, not the speed of the machine. You would need something to increase the speed of the feed nut, which would take some very customized, and I would guess expensive, engineering. Better to invest in a good 2 minute machine, and for playing 2 minute I recommend an Edison Fireside.
