Hi Bill & List,
A product that I've found that works every bit as well as Kroil, and is
a lot cheaper and more readily available is plain old "Marvel Mystery
Oil!" As I'm sure you all know, "Marvel" is NOT a lubricating oil in the
regular sense and should be used to oil bearings and such. But it's
properties as a upper cylinder lubricant give it excellent wicking
properties, and capillary action will draw it into tight spaces to free
rusted parts. I once dig the transmisssion cover from Model T Ford
literally from the mud where it had been buried for probably 50 years.
Two weeks worth of daily applications of Marvel oil, and just the
slightest tap with a rubber hammer to encourage the oil to flow into the
crevices, and the transmission shafts freed up and are now working well
in a fully restired Model T. Automatic transmission fluid will also
work, thiugh not as quickly as marvel oil. You just need to be patient,
and not try to "force" the frozen joint. Time and Marvel Mystery Oil
will free up most rusted shafts and bearings you are likely to find on a
phonograph.
