hi renee and all
ebay has taken its share of low end machines with very high prices and the
overly restored machines.
the real nice ones still seem to make it to the show.
a friend bought a very nice bgt from bill kocker in the back for a very fair
price and i bought alot of 5000 blue amberols for under 5 dollars
along with some rare early victor predog records for next to nothing for what
they are worth
the show changes from year to year so i know we dont get pleased every year
because of our different interests.
the one rare item there to see was the beat up graphaphone shaver which was
on an auction site. someone paid over 7 k for that.
and the oliphants had many nice machines too including some north american
edison machines and early victors.
happy collecting all

This was my first time to union and found it most enjoyable. My wife and I
bought a small group of records, but no machines. I was able to find more jazz
and blues records at the Union than I can find here on the east coast at any of
the east coast shows or other record swaps. Getting back to phonographs, if I
was to buy a high quality machine in mint condition I would definitely purchase
it at the Union show even if I had to pay premium. Why? Because mint original
machines are hard to come by these days. I saw an Edison Opera for $9,000.
Expensive, yes, but knowing that in a few years Operas will be commanding over
$10,000, it caused me to think, especially when it came from a long time
private collection and the condition was outstanding. Look at it this way; can
you get $9,000 today for a dining room set which you purchased from Ethan Allen
for $9,000 5 years ago? Probably not..you'll be lucky if you can get $5,000
for it. So I say grab it while you can. Even if you overpay for the phonograph
initially, the machine will continue to increase in value and you will be
happier in the long run.

You are correct there weren't any really good cheap junkers at the Union show.
You may have a better chance of finding junkers at some of the east coast
shows. There are some east coast dealers who attend the east coast shows who
just sell phonographs that need some TLC and parts to go along with it. Best of
luck!

Useful information, Rick. As someone who once worked in the investment field, I
applaud your view on the future appreciation of phonographs. Antiques and
collectibles are considered as appreciable assets in the investment industry
when creating a portfolio.
How often have we cringed at the price of a phonograph only to say a few years
later, "If only I had bought it back then"...

I don't know if I got lucky or not but if I had put the $100 I spent on my
Vic type 6 into a CD at 8% thirty years ago, I'd have less than $2000. I'm
sure not all machines have appreciated as well as the 6 though.
