Last spring a new DVD came out that contains a 1998 A&E Biography episode about
Enrico Caruso. I just bought and found it quite entertaining. The name of the
DVD is Enrico Caruso - Voice of the Century / My Cousin (1918) (With Audio CD).
The reason I bring this up here is that one of the people being interviewed has
a nice collection of phonographs and there are even some scenes where they play
an Edison cylinder machine and a Columbia disc machine. There is also a shot of
the Edison Museum of America with a nice looking Victor VI with a large Brass
horn on the video. The DVD also contains a slient movie made in 1918 called My
Cousin where Caruso plays two parts. It may not be the best film ever made, but
you do get to see Caruso perform part of his famous aria from Pagliacci on the
stage of the old Metropolitan Opera house in New York.

There is also an audio CD with many of his famous Victor recordings on it.

The link below is to Amazon.com where they have the DVD for sale.

If the link doesn't work for you just go to http://www.amazon.com and search
for "Caruso voice of the century".

I had something happen tonight that was a first for me. While playing a record
on one of my Victrola's I had the main spring break!

It was so violent that the record came off of the center post. Luckily, the
record wasn't damaged.

It looks like I am going to get my first shot at totally replacing a main
spring.

Be prepared to get dirty. Make note of which way the spring winds in
the barrel. Even broke springs will unwind violently when you pull them
out of the barrel. I drop mine into a heavy sack and using pliers held
in a gloved hand, pull on the center winding to get the spring out.
