I believe Edison used black asphaltum on his bedplates, it was thickly applied 
if you ever strip a bedplate the amount of rough places (pot holes) in the 
casting are amazing.  If anyone has any info on how Edison applied this, please 
let me know.  Was the maroon paint asphaltum?
