I don't think there was black primer under the maroon paint.  I have Seen
many of these that are missing a high percentage of the paint and it shows
no sign of black primer....Probably the reason so many have significant
paint loss......the Asphaltum black paint was extremely durable compared to
the maroon paint for the GEM....
