In my younger days, I used a mix of turpentine and linseed oil to salvage dried-out, cruddy windowsills. about 50/50, brushed into the wood every few days until it wouldn't take any more - then painted over it with good oil paint. They've held up for 19 years, so far!
I tried it in an Orthophonic, too (no paint, just the mix) - I forget how many coats, but it seemed to just soak in and disappear. I then sealed all the joints I could reach, and it still seems fine after 15+ years (I forget how many ) . One thing, though : it was stinky, and remained aromatic for well over a year !
