There are several different standards that are still available in
England. They use both the 60 degree sharp root and crest pattern that
is the general pattern and the old Whitworth profile of 55 degrees and
rounded root and crest. The standards are also different for the
threads per inch for a given diameter. The old Whitworth pattern used a
thread/inch for a given body diameter that is identical to the standard
US NC or NF. This place supposedly has Whitworth fasteners,
http://www.thomassmithfasteners.com/ These issues are hard to sort out
due to the changing standards over the years. Back about 1900 the
Whitworth standard was in common use and as luck would have it did not
change much over its lifetime. I do have thread/bolt data but its
burred in The machinery Handbook. The British Live Steam Model
Engineering industry still uses all of these various standards and has
parts but they are not real big on having websites.

Thank you Rich. I think this is the solution.
Do you know what is the difference between American Threaded Fasteners and
British Association BA?

The Whitworth thread shape and pitch standards are used in some of the current
British Model Engineering sizes. Measure the actual diameter of your screw and
determine its diameter in fractions of a n inch and then measure the thread
pitch and convert to threads/inch. Select fasteners on this page.
http://sssmodels.com/ This is not the only place you can get them but its a
start. The thread profile is 55 degrees with a rounded root and crest.
Nothing else fits but a Whitworth.

Those screws are, for sure, from a Bettini reproducer. And, of course, they are
more than 100 years. Perhaps the picture, because of the camera flash, has a
too hight contrast and screws look like new ones, but if you look at them
directly you can count the years they are.
I woulk like to find a withworth 1/8'' nut better than changing the screws. Do
you think is so difficult?

Gabriel,
Those screws don't look 100 years old and I doubt that they are original to
your machine. I think I would replace them with screws and nuts of the
samesise with standard threads. You can probably find some old ones that would
be in character with your machine. Keep the screws you have with your machine
just in case you ever find the correct nut,

Subject: [Phono-L] Problems with withworth screws
I am restoring a phonograph and have found a problem with screws and nuts. This
image: http://www.boxio.com/390IKUMODS33/withworth screws&nut.JPG shows two
screws and a copper nut that is to be embedded in the wood. Well, my problem is
that the phonograph lacks the other nut. Here, in Spain, there is almost impossible
to find withworth screws o nuts as they have never been used here since more than
one hundred years.
Do any of you know where can I get a nut to put it embedded in the wood? I
think the metric is 1/8'' Withworth.
Thanks in advance,
Gabriel.
