I agree that I also see no evidence of a kindly, merciful being which oversaw 
Nature and the world, however no one really knows. However, that's not the 
point, ALS is just an awful disease, I knew someone who had it - anything that 
gives someone with this hope and comfort or gives some kind of peace amongst 
the ravages of the horrible and inevitable fate ALS brings should be encouraged 
and embraces. We can all only hope that we are never faced with that kind of 
debilitating disease. It's sad to see anyone go through that. If you want to 
help out or do something to honor him I would suggest donating to the Les 
Turner foundation - they seem to be working hard to find a cure and to better 
treat ALS. They used to do a huge record sale in the Chicago area called the 
Mammoth Music Mart years back as a fund raiser, I believe them to be a very 
worthwhile organization.
