It's actually a very convenient thing, helping to reduce the awkwardness of the little flip lever and likely preventing stylus damage from missing the edge of the record.
I think they came out around the same time as the LP system, where protecting the fine LP stylus was even more crucial. I use the 10" every time I play a record. Very nice to have.
