Note the serial number of 90081 on the Class M topworks... odd, isn't it?
Hello Al and list, Is it too high? I lack knowledge. I did notice the early
automatic reproducer with a serial number of 10086. The pre 30,000 automatic
reproducers do not have the lettering on the body, they got the lettering when
the recorder joined in around 30,000. The early automatic reproducers have the
blank arm, the arm appeared in the 50,000 range, the blank arm is still seen on
the reproducer in the 60,000 range. They all have serial numbers, I have seen
speakers and reproducers in the 2000 serial number range, that is the lowest I
have seen. If anyone has a recessed top with a serial number under 40,000 I
would be interested in photos of the top and bottom.
When people sell recessed tops with no serial numbers there are only two
possiblilties, Edison skipped it by accident or it has a reproduction top. In
all my years of collecting I have only seen one Edison dome top recorder with
no serial number. Accidents did happen, but not very often. When someone says
the early ones did not have serial numbers they are mistaken. The C arm
appears sporadically into 1907 for two reasons. Edison never wasted and to
upgrade an early carriage with the clips to a C unless you added the centering
pin and set screw which I have seen done on a suitcase home, the arm was
necessary for stylus placement. In the B to K serial numbers the top that says
reproducer appeared around 108,000, up til then all C's and D's have the arm,
but the B for the Gem did not and does not say reproducer on the top. There
are three different no reproducer tops. As always any corrections are most
welcome. Steve > To: [email protected]
