That's why I had suggested a stronger spring could be put in the barrel,
probably at minimal cost. (I had a special spring put in my 30s Thorens
portable and it came to around $60 plus shipping. Plays 12" discs like
gangbusters now.) And as for discussing crap-o-phones, the one external-horn
disc machine I have is a Victor Jr., and even with a restored soundbox and a
Monarch spring in the barrel it sounds thin and modest - such is its nature -
so if you want an external horn machine that can, with some modification, sound
fairly good and look attractive at a minimal cost, why not buy a
"crap-o-phone"? The only point of a Victor Jr. is _having_ one, not listening
to it - so what if it's "original"?

Unfortunately some have motors so weak a normal sound box will not work.
