Please note (as is stated at the top of the URL you posted [http://www.phpmyadmin.net/documentation/]) that the documentation on that page is for phpMyAdmin v2.3.0-dev. That is, the development version of phpMyAdmin.
Never the less, you still have a valid query of "why does the php module/binary crash when this development release is used", as (IMHO) it should not be possible to crash php in such a way by using php code alone. I dont have a copy of PHP v4.2.0 running in order to test it with phpMyAdmin v2.2.6 (the current stable release).
