Not really.  Speed-wise, adding modules has a negligible effect.  As far as 
simplicity goes, we're talking about simplicity for the 
developer.  Bundling features does make things simpler for the majority of 
the target audience.

I obviously agree with that.  I do want to see mbstring become an 
integrated part of PHP, but not a moment sooner than when it is stable.
