I think there is some sort of assumption by others that HTML is the only thing we need to worry about. I suspect the importance of XML compliance would be weighed up differently if people believed that PHP will be widely used for XML application in the future - particularly with version 5.

Before we have a discussion about short tage removal - "good or bad". We need to provide some context for the discussion.
For me, the context is "near future" and version 5.
