I know you would want to code your chmod, but I use my CuteFTP window to auto-calculate which permissions I want to use/code. Not necessary on Windows, but on Unix it's an absolute.

I use 644 (Read Owner, Read Group, Read Public,Write Owner, on a Unix server with no trouble for normal *.PHP files.
