I was hoping NOT to receive this kind of answers, but guess it's logical. On the other hand, when reading your answer Justin, it came to my mind (and that's luck) that HTML (Web) e-mail readers made in PHP does manage the incoming e-mails with no server-side assistance... Is it logical to think that a PHP script of this sort, joined by an 1 second auto-reload would do the trick?
I mean, detect new e-mail, authenticate the sender in a DB, decide what to do (suscribe, unsubscribe or send to list), and take action... Am I talking crazy or what? Obviously I'm thinking about a small-to-medium size mailing list.
