To test php on XP you will need the right version of PHP installed,
suggest 4 until 5 is more widely used on servers, but double check
with your server owner on this.

Then you will need mysql so soon that you should install it right away.

The PWS is NOT needed, no need to get involved with that.   I use
WebWeaver for a nice lightweight server. It has many Apache features
without all the cofig issues.

Finally, get a good PHP editor, many are available.

All of this is free, readily available.
