Alex, I know of a great FREE web server program you can try, known as
XAMPP, and you can download it at http://www.apachefriends.org/en (the
main page is in German, hence the "/en" at the end of the URL). XAMPP
is a bundled program consisting of Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, and Open
SSL, and some other useful related tools as well. And I know for a
fact that it will run on Windows XP, because I've got it on my wife's
computer, and she has Windows XP.

In addition, for anyone else who's interested in this program but has
something other than Windows (like me -- last winter, I had enough of
WinDOH!s screw-ups and dumped WinDOH!s for Mandrake Linux and haven't
looked back since), XAMPP also comes in Linux and Macintosh versions.
Be aware, though, that the Mac version is only in beta right now, so
I'd give it a little while until they do an official Mac release if
you're on a Mac. And yes, I do have LAMPP (the Linux version of
XAMPP) on my Mandrake box, too -- I very HIGHLY recommend XAMPP.

Also, if you're looking for a good free PHP editor for Windows, I
recommend Crimson Editor, which does syntax highlighting for over 100
programming languages (including stuff like HTML, JavaScript, CSS,
PHP, and Java, just to name a few that I know for a fact it highlights
from personal experience), not to mention, it's a great little Notepad
replacement, too. Not only that, but the file for it is small enough
to even be stored on a floppy disk, so if you're on dialup (like me --
yeah, I'm a cheapskate), Crimson Editor won't take long at all to
download (on the other hand, XAMPP is a pretty big program and so it
might take 2 or 3 hours to download if you're on dialup). However,
Crimson Editor is only available for Windows, while Mac and Linux both
have several other great editors to choose from.

Like I said, I've used both of these quite a bit, and I can vouch for
the quality of both XAMPP and Crimson Editor -- and they're both free,
no less! Good luck!

Hope this helps,
Fred in Lexington, KY
