Thanks, for your prompt reply, Mike. The version of Mambo is 4.5.2. Because everything on the site is currently implemented in Mambo and I've had little to do with it to date except add content and move it around, I'm not eager to try to upgrade at this time.
But thinking in Mambo is still quite alien to me, and not likely to get easier. SO, thanks very much for your suggested workaround, which is what I am going to try. I downloaded phpSurveyor and will go the wrapper route to start. May check in with you later on if things seem to go awry.
