There is still something to be said for Verdana and friends. To be honest, a Helvetica, Ariel, etc. -based font stack would be nice too; for different reasons than why we choose these newfangled web fonts. > > However, some users have reported that it looks really bad on certain > > setups; Lester is one such user so I have CC'd him here. > I can’t really say much on this. On the few devices that I have available, the fonts don’t show anything horrible. (*hugs apple-branded devices*) I’ve not personally seen anything bad on the few Windows machines I use either, but the spread of OS versions, browsers, and monitors across those doesn’t exactly cover a huge amount of what’s available. Feedback on whether the Fira fonts on your test site suffer from similar issues as other people have been seeing would be most welcome. > > > > Today I looked at a free font by Mozilla called Fira Sans. Lester, can you check? You can preview it on my dev server: > > http://leviathon.homenet.org/ > > > > Overall, what do you guys think? Source Sans Pro or Fira Sans? > I’m actually an indecisive +0 on the choice between those. We know that the current choice has some issues for some people. I’d like to see if Fira does too before switching. I do however like the reduction in weight on the text that you have made, providing more distinction with the (lots of!) text that we apply bold styling to (which could be stronger in your Fira sample). Part of me is saying, commit the change and folks will let us know if they don’t like it and/or it breaks the site horribly! In the grand scheme of things, it’s a small change and I like the idea of putting these little incremental changes in sooner rather than later (even if they turn out bad and we revert, or otherwise fix, them later).
