So, to sum up: Fira Sans seems to be better than Source Sans Pro but
still has problems on some of your machines?

Closer inspection ... yes

Both the 10" tablet and the Samsung phone were usable with Source Sans Pro but not 'comfortable' ... Fira Sans has solved that problem.

On the desktop machines which have 1920x1200 on 24" or 26" monitors - a pair on each - Fira Sans is about as readable as Source Sans Pro was on the tablet. It's more usable, but still not 'comfortable'. The font I've ended up with on the override is giving a little thicker character width which just improves the readability. Although I have improved the contrast as well which also helps. I've been wearing glasses for a few years now, and contrast is as important as character sizes. I am thinking that the brightness of the back-light on the various devices plays a part as well.
