Until then, it seems that I have another issue with attachments. ;-)
I sent a message with two attached .eml files. In the web UI I only see the »main« message. The attachments are not shown either inline (as part
of the »main« message) or as attachments (no links, no paper clip
icon).

With pilerget I can retrieve the whole message just fine. The message
looks like this (some header lines and personal information removed):

yes. Piler strips MIME parts only with filenames. So if you have a
base64 encoded textual MIME part in your email then piler won't detach
it from the message. It's indeed a mime part, but not an attached file.
Although it would be possible to split an email to mime parts, but
it might hurt performance.
