Personally I've found the advanced timeline more intuitive and better to use. Admittedly I haven't used Pitivi too much yet, it crashed trying to render an mpeg and I can't do NTSC DVD from it but I'm sure that will come. I tried to render a 29.95fps mpeg when it crashed, however, that is outside this discussion. My vote...ditch the simple timeline.
