"Now, the Food and Drug Administration is making it easier for kids unhappy with their height. It recently approved a human growth hormone for children, who, for no known medical reason, aren't expected to grow taller than 5-3 for boys and 4-11 for girls.
Before the FDA gave its nod, the hormone was sanctioned only for short children with deficient hormone levels or other medical problems.
It's a controversial decision that has critics accusing drug companies of turning shortness into a medical problem. In a world awash in makeover madness, from hit TV shows to plastic surgery revamps, they see it as labeling a child who doesn't look a certain way as deficient.
"Too many people today think if a child doesn't fit within a certain mold, there's something wrong," says William Bruno Jr., who practiced pediatrics in Hollywood, Fla., for 30 years. "They've forgotten the importance of being an individual."
I find this to be very controversial...do you think growth hormone should be an option for healthy, but short, kids?
