Noa, I sometimes must double or tripple my cortef. I have been panhypopituitary since 1998. My Endo. told me to double my dosage if I have a fever and get to the hospital if I am sick and can not hold my medicine down. An adrenal crisis is very dangerous. You can go into a coma. I once woke up with a virus (throwing up and diarea). I passed out every time I tried to stand. I also have diabetes insipidus and was dehydrating. That was the worst episode I have had. If you go to the hospital they should keep you overnight (at least) and give your medication intraveniously (my spelling is also no longer good). Never go without your medic alert bracelet stating that you have insufficient adrenal function. I also carry a laminted "in case of emergency" letter stating my health problems with a listing of my medications. When my cortef gets low I have problems comprehending and communicating. I finally had to leave my job of 28 years. I could no longer give presentations. I could not solve problems. The stress was unbearable. I would have to go to bed when I got home from work and stay until the next morning. I hate taking extra cortef. I get "puffy" and gain weight.
Regards Cynthia Queen

I understand that in primary adrenal insufficiency (where it's caused by a problem with the adrenals) adrenal crisis is possible. What I'm not sure about is whether it can happen with secondary (pituitary) AI. Does anyone with low cortisol have a horrible stress response where you have some sort of adrenal crisis and need extra steroids? If so, what kind of symptoms do you get? I hope you understand what I'm trying to find out. Thank you very much for your help. Noa
