It is really no big deal. Lots of noises (clanking or
"flip-flop, flip flop" noises) as the machine calibrates itself. Then,
once the scan starts, loud buzzing noise, and vibration. All you have to
do is sit back and relax, and try to stay as still as possible. Nothing
touches your body at all, although sometimes they put your head in a harness
designed to keep you from moving. I have also had the techs tape my head
to the board I am lying on to try to keep me still (though that should not have
been too hard, I have gone to sleep several times during my MRIs).
Sometimes they give you headphones so you can (1) listen to music, and (2) hear
the technicians better (often they will communicate with you that way - - "OK,
now we're going to do another series. This one will last about 7 minutes,
and we have 4 more after that" - - or something like that. The headphones
also help to drown out the noise of the machine.
If you have a scan "with contrast" they will at some point take you back
out of the machine, inject you with the dye (no worse than a blood draw for me),
and do the same thing all over again.

6 months. My doctor has ordered an MRI. Can someone
please tell me what to expect.
