Hi Jen, I am sorry to hear that you had to have emergency surgery. It sounds like you had pituitary tumor apoplexy. Did that cause the infected sinus cavity? That is always the possibility of watching and waiting with a pituitary tumor-the chance of apoplexy. I have watched and waited for almost four years-eight since I knew about the pituitary "cyst." It is always in the back of my mind-that I could need emergency surgery one day. I do not live near any hospitals that could handle emergency brain/pituitary surgery, so I would have to fly to see my surgeon. Even in an emergency, I want the best surgeon to handle my care. I know it must have been hard because you didn't know you would need the surgery so quickly. Apoplexy can be fatal, so you are very blessed. I am sorry that they damaged your pituitary gland, but I am glad they left the stalk and hypothalmus intact. It sounds like you are panhypopit and probably need complete hormone replacement. After you get your replacements adjusted to meet your body's specific needs, you should feel better. Have you had your IGF-1 (growth hormone) checked? You may have low-to-non-existent GH, which would cause fatigue, aches, nausea, lack of energy, etc. You need GH to feel well. I hope you find your answers, soon. Just so you know, it is very rare for a pituitary tumor patient to have a craniotomy, even with pituitary apoplexy. They must have been concerned that your infected sinus cavity may infect your CSF or other areas of your brain. Where was your incision for the surgery? There are so many different incisions for craniotomies. I have had several friends with primary brain tumors, so I know quite a bit about bts and bt treatment in general. Was your neurosurgeon a specialist in pituitary or skull base surgery? I realize that you were in an emergency situation, but I am wondering if you were referred to a specialist or a general neurosurgeon. I will keep you in my prayers. I am glad that you are learning as much as you can about your disease. Please let me know if I can help you find any information. Take care. Meri |
