The endonasal surgery in Pittsburgh with Dr. Kassam on Sept. 1st went fine, then 6 days post-op, I began vomiting and developed Hyponatremia.
http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/79/5/1395Unfortunately, I was in rural North Carolina at the time
(planning to continue the drive back to Florida after a few days
rest), where there is no hospital and the nearest
hospital, Spruce Pine, had no endocrinologist, so, I
was flown back to UPMC where I spent some quality time
in ICU. I had an IV in my left forearm, but they
needed a vein capable of handling a more caustic
sodium solution, so a 'pick' line was attempted -
first in my neck, then in the area of my clavical.
Neither worked. They tried both my right and left
upper arms, and were about to send me into
'interventional radiology', when I ended up with an IV
in the groin. (I spent less time havng brain
surgery!)
Kassam said that my low sodium could lead to brain swelling and seizures!
I came through okay.
