Hi Alex, I have a prolactinoma and it would seem it has been there for about 8 years (after my last child was born and I finished breastfeeding I continued to have raised prolactin and it has gone up an up for the last 8 years) I went to my GP last Sept and was complaining of constantly feeling tired and run down, aching all over and lots of headaches when they finally decided to send me for an MRI which I had in March. When I saw the Consultant he said that with most Prolactinoma's the medication will begin to work straight away and I should see a reduction in the prolactin at my next blood test. I have had Cabergoline twice weekly since April and I went for a blood test in June (before Cabergoline it was 740, after 8 weeks of tablets 10!!) My GP is not very good and does not know very much about the ins and outs of a Prolactinoma but from my reading around and speaking to the Consultant earlier this year (I go back to see him October) It would seem that he will keep me on Cabergoline for about 12 months with regular blood tests. Then I believe he will take me off it and test again to see if prolactin has gone up again, from what I understand it probably will do. The medication does not get rid of the tumour but prevents the tumour producing prolactin. The tumour does reduce in size as it is no longer secreting prolactin so it is not active, this is what I believe is correct. I then understand the doctor will begin Cabergoline again and I will likely to take it on and off forever. I can only say that I did not know how bad I had been feeling until I started to take Cabergoline. It was not instant but after about 4 weeks I began to have a lot more energy and not ache or get dreadful hormonal headaches. I used to go to the gym, up to about Feb this year but It was so painful and achy that I gave up. I started to go again this month and OH my it is like I have been given a new body. I thought I would ache like crazy afterwards so I really toned down my routine and I felt fine, so the next time I did the routine I had done in the past, fine, the next time I upped my weights and repetitions and WOW I feel brilliant. It was not until now I realised how bad extra prolactin had made my body feel. Cabergoline is not without side effects though! I feel crappy for about the first half day after taking it, tried the gym the following morning had to give up half way through, on the running machine it felt like I was treading through concrete. I get a 'hangover' feeling the next morning (I take it at night after my meal) But once the fog has lifted I feel great, full of life until the morning after my second tablet, so I guess I don't mind that too much. It is worth it. Hope this was of some use to you. Cathi |
