Hello, I think it's a bit early and aggressive to assume you would need
radiation after surgery. Some people have surgery, do just fine and move on.
The surgery can cause you to loose some pit function, but it's most likely to
cause you to loose growth hormone vs. the other hormones, as GH cells are on
the outside of the gland which is where tumors usually are attached. GH shots
are not big deal in terms of physical pain......you'll probably experience more
physical pain dealing with your insurance company to get reimbursed for the
medicine. :) Surgery is the 1st line treatment. You don't want to do a
"wait & watch" as this is fatal if not treated......and the sooner the better.
Other than changes in your physicial appearance, the biggest concern is that
your heart will continue to grow and wear itself out or become too big for your
chest cavity. You don't want to wait until this happens. Have you found a
surgeon who has lots of experience with pituitary surgeries? I would talk to
at least 2 surgeons as there are different approaches and each have their
merit. I highly recommend Dr Ian McCutheon at MD Anderson in Houstin, Texas.
DON'T pick a surgeon just because they are close to your home. It's too
important to find a top notch one so there's no need for a second surgery or
lose of more pit function than is necessary. Let us know how you're doing.
