I think one of the most serious things to consider before
surgery would be where the tumor is located and what the odds of permanent
damage to your pituitary gland would be. Even with the best surgeons, a
non functioning gland will need long term treatment. My husband's tumor
shrank considerably with only 1 month of meds and still we were told surgery
wasn't only necessary but the "only" route. It all happened very quickly,
not to mention the severe mental changes the Bromocriptine was causing. I
could not find any information at that time on Pit tumors. Since that time
we have been told that his surgery was completely unnecessary. There are
some serious side effects that folks have mentioned on this board that range
from depression, to sinus infections, numbness, chronic fatigue. It seems
that each case is seriously specialized. My husband recovered very quickly
from surgery, but it was not successful. I have read from people on this
board who have had several surgeries. My husband does take medication
from the residual tumor, but there was almost a 100% chance that he would have
residual tumor. He is treating his tumor now exactly as he did before
surgery. It was an unnecessary risk on his part, I
believe. Just do your homework and get lots of input.

<HTML>hi
everyone, sorry to jump in suddenly now. If my experience helps
you a little, I will be happy. I had Dostinex (medical
treatment) for 1 year, even at maximum dose, but my tumor
didn't
shrink at all, and developped side effect like depression. So I
had to stop and my only choice was surgery. I had a wonderful
surgery with Dr. Post who is very famous in this issue, He is
Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. Since I had the surgery in 2004,
everything became normal, so far perfect. I returned to work as
trader in bank one month later, and still doing completely
fine.
Completely normal life. If you can find a wonderful doctor, you
will be saved and recover quickly. Hope you will do well. Good
                luck.

Where did you have
surgery? Who was your neurosurgeon? Everyone says
that the first choice for treatment of a pituitary tumor is
surgery. However, both neuros I saw said meds first,
surgery later. Most people on this board seem to get
surgery first and then meds, if needed. Did you or do
you now need medication to treat any residual tumor?
Thanks for answering my questions. I am working with a
therapist doing EMDR therapy to get myself more comfortable
with the idea of medication and/or surgery.
