Ok, my husband is on Norprolac so I will tell your the pros
and cons for us. The Bromocriptine is an ergot derivative and Norprolac is
not. Dostinex is an ergot derivative as well. Those are the two main
dopamine agonists used in the US. For some reason my husband is extremely
sensitive to these meds. Both Dostinex and Bromocriptine
altered his mental state completely. He became aggressive, hyper
sexual and paranoid. He went from being a very laid back, consistent
person to following me around, sleeping in his car on the side of the road
etc. This was after 2 weeks on Bromocriptine. We tried experimental
Parkinson's meds like Mirapex before I finally found Norprolac. There was
absolutely no option of going back to Bromocriptine or the Dostinex. He
would have had low prolactine levels but we would have had to commit him to the
psche ward. The sad thing is, not one endocrinologist has yet to agree
that it is the meds. Ergot is what they make LSD from and from what I have
read it lingers in the soft tissues of the brain and people have
"flashbacks". They told me that Dostinex and Bromo exited the system
within days, but my husband had "flashback" episodes for 6 months after going
off Dostinex. They were terrifying. One minute he is your husband and the
next he is acting like a psycho maniac. Since that time, we have had no
problems mentally. The package insert for both Bromocriptine and Dostinex
say it can cause psychosis. It also says that for Norprolac, but we
haven't had that problem yet.
Long story short, we convinced a doctor at UT Southwestern
University in Dallas, Texas to prescribe the Norprolac. We haven't had any
problems psychosomatically on this med and his levels have decreased. We
have problems with the Testosterone gel. He has to be very careful with
increasing his dosage or he turns into a very rude and angry man. We have
5 kids and so we want everyone to be healthy and interact well with each
other. The kids understand to a degree, but a lot of his problems were
that Bromo made him feel he was going through puberty again 100
fold.
Hope that helps!
Beka
