Our idea -- though we need to discuss this with Casper (as architect of the last round of changing all the directory permissions) -- was to create directories missing from the imageplan with a standard set of permissions. Possibly those are hard-coded, or maybe they inherit from the lowest existing parent directory (so then you'd only have to deliver directories whose perms differ from their parents). And yeah, we'll have to have a core package that delivers all the basics at the top level, but we need that for other reasons, anyway. > (Yes, there's the "?" mechanism but our current policies and practices > discourage its use.) And for good reason -- there's no policy to tell pkgadd how to create those directories if they're not already there.
