There is really an instance, as shown with listprop.
svccfg -s application/pkg/server listprop
and
svccfg -s application/pkg/server:default listprop
produce different output. The
<create_default_instance enabled='false' />
statement in the service manifest create the instance called "default".

You're still talking about instances, though -- "The port number on which
the instance ...", which should probably just be replaced by "service".
