I'll let Dan expand on some of the ideas he had about this, but his idea 
of perhaps letting what you're upgrading to let you know if there's 
going to need to be a manual step is a good one. If we provide a general 
hook in version X so that the client's pkg can always be told to display 
an arbitrary warning message and ask for confirmation, it seems like 
that might cover all contingencies, but I'm not certain.
