I agree with the need to provide some warning for the pkg(1) image-update.

However, I disagree with doing this in the GUI. The GUI is meant to make actions simple and obvious. If an action is not fully automated and requires some external steps to complete safely then we should remove the functionality until it can be carried out by the GUI without any other external steps. The GUI should expose the functionality when its ready. This is particularly true if at present an image-update can brick your system if you have not carried out some additional steps.

The user can always drop to the command line if they want this functionality for now.

Proposal: drop the Update All button from the IPS GUI for the BTS release, as opposed to throwing up a warning dialog to read the release notes.

From our standpoint xDesign are the experts on UI design and so have the final say on what goes into the GUI. We have been working with them on the GUI design since its inception. I'm cc'ing Frank and Jenya for their input.

However, I agree that we are likely to continue to run into flag-day issues occasionally, and it would be nice to have a way to notify users of them more directly. I'm not sure the generic "review the notes" message is going to do it, though.

Can we agree that the perfect should not be the enemy of the good
here? Telling people to review *something* is better than doing
nothing, then waiting for a mechanism that (as Shawn pointed out) we
don't really have.

We have what's left of this week to do something here for the BTS
release. I'd like to close this issue so that I can get to code review
and get this in. If there are strong objections, I'd like folks to
speak up by Noon PT tomorrow (thursday).

I'm seeking agreement that we're going to place the following message
and question in the image-update path:

  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: image-update of a system should be performed only after reviewing
upgrade notes posted at: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/rn3/
  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you reviewed the upgrade notes? [y,n,q]

I'm working to ensure that this message fires at the correct times, and
have noted to the GUI folks that they should do likewise.
