Could you do a 'pkg contents -m entire'? I know for a short time, we delivered an empty entire, it's possible you're in that state.

-bash-3.2# pkg contents -m entire
set name=fmri value=pkg:/[email protected],5.11-0.111:20090512T144328Z
set name=description value="entire incorporation"
set name=variant.arch value=sparc value=i386
set name=publisher value=opensolaris.org
-bash-3.2#

Yep, you hit the bad place. I think the safest thing is probably to zfs rollback to the snapshot taken before the update was attempted (the one mounted at /tmp/tmp4mS_LL). Then do
pkg install [email protected],4.11-0.111

Then do 'pkg install -nv SUNWipkg' and assuming that now shows a small number of packages being updated, install SUNWipkg, then try pkg image-update again.

Thx,
