If you didn't do a zfs rollback (or reboot to the alternate be) using
the snapshot that pkg(5) named whenever you first encountered the
original install failure, then this isn't really entirely unexpected
since the first install only partially installed files on your system.
So yes, you'll need to go back to the original BE, and try again.
