I agree, that's why I threw out the idea of posing the question on
discussion lists/starting a poll somewhere. By the same token, I'd
like to see more than one person stating they'd like to keep -a as
the default.

multi-term queries properly" and leave the default where it is.
That would be my preference, since I prefer the action-oriented output (but
would like -p to DTRT). But I'm happy if you want to poll some of the
lists and get a rough consensus that folks prefer -p by default.
Ok, I'll make the change, leave the default as is, and see if I can
gather some information.
BTW, I didn't check to see if you can override the term-by-term
transformation. That is, if the default is the equivalent of
<smf> </lib/svc/method>
then is there some way of actually specifying
<smf /lib/svc/method>

transforming a list of packages to a list of packages is a noop.
