I'm more familiar with git and it's what the rest of the pkg-fso packages use. So I'd go with git. I think we just have to try how it works out with git-svn. Do you have some webspace where you can push your git repository to? Would it be acceptable to push the repository to pkg-fso? There were plans last summer to convert the d-i repository to git. I usually use picocom. This sounds like your using the wrong speed. With picocom you have key combinations to switch between different speeds. OTOH the cables break easily.
